Michael and Shakira Caine
'I'm deliriously happy, I'm a real family man. I just love to go home.'
Actor Michael Caine fell in love with Wife Shakira the first time he saw her. It was more or less love at first sight for actor Michael Caine, after he spotted former Miss Guyana Shakira Baksh starring in a TV advert for Maxwell House coffee in 1971. The advert had been shot in Brazil and Michael was so struck by the 23-year-old that he was prepared to fly there to meet her.
With a little investigation however, Michael found that Shakira wasn't Brazilian as he had originally thought but Indian and that she actually lived only a few kilometres away from him. Michael wasted no time, got her telephone number and asked her out.
He must have received a positive response because the couple were married on January 8, 1973. She was 25 and he was 40, and some questioned how much they had in common. But the marriage is said to be one of the strongest in show business and has certainly proved the critics wrong.
Michael has a daughter Dominique from his first marriage to actress Patricia Haines and Shakira and Michael have a daughter Natasha.
The couple live in a 200-year-old barn, which they have converted into a luxurious modern home in the Surrey countryside between Box Hill and Leatherhead.
Michael says: "I'm deliriously happy, I love the house. I'm very happy there, and I'm a real family man. I just love to go home. People ask me, 'Where do you go for your holidays?' I say 'I go home.'
