'You would think that a rock star being married to a super-model would be one of the greatest things in the world. It is.'
Legendary musician David Bowie met Somalian-born model Iman over dinner at a mutual friend's house. The following year, David proposed on a boat trip through Paris.
The couple were married in 1992 and celebrated their union with a pair of his-and-hers tattoos – Iman bears a Bowie knife, a reflection of David's showbiz moniker, while he had an ode to his bride tattooed on his left leg.
They each had a child from a previous marriage; David gained a stepdaughter Zulekha Haywood from Iman's previous marriage to NBA star Spencer Haywood. Iman gained a stepson Zowie Duncan Heywood Bowie from his marriage to actress Angie Bowie, now known as Joe who was also best man at the couples wedding.
The couple struggled to have a child together and Iman went through IVF several times before giving birth to Alexandria Zahra Jones, nicknamed Lexi in August 2000.
As well as a successful modelling career, Iman is fluent in five languages and studied political science at the university of Nairobi.
Apparently, David has to hide all his erotic art whenever his in-laws visit - because Iman's father would be offended. The model's dad is a strict Muslim, and still has reservations about the career his daughter chose. She reveals, 'To my father nudity is obscene. It's against my religion and it has been a major conflict in our family - even being a model goes against that. At the end of the day, I'm my father's daughter and if there are any naked pictures up when he comes round I put them away.'
Iman says: 'David and I had done it all separately and then we found each other. After 14 years, I still fancy him and he makes me laugh like no one else does. He's such a curious person, always interested in new things, and I find that interesting too. Sometimes it feels like we've been married for 40 years, and sometimes it's like we've just met, but I really feel as if I've known him all my life. When you're young, you think of love in terms of fireworks, but I think women need more emotional security, and he is there for me all the time, which is something that had never happened to me before.'
