27 year-old Nicole Cabell has just become the first American in twenty years to win the prestigious
Singer Of The World Award, 2005. The opera competition held in Cardiff, Wales will turn Nicole into an international sensation.
Things haven't always looked so rosy for the young singer who is of Korean, African American and European heritage, she recently told The ventuta County Star, 'When I was young, I was a shy child, being of mixed race a lot of kids would tease me. It wasn't until I entered junior high and I went into a drama class (that I began) breaking through my fears and phobias. It changed my life'.
Nicole began taking music seriously at the age of fifteen and would pay for her singing lessons with music teacher Vincent Sorisio by doing chores around his home.
The biennial Cardiff competition has been likened to 'American Idol' because all the singers are relative unknowns, and the winner is certain to attain stardom. Through an audition process, 25 singers of all voice ranges are selected to compete against one another in six rounds.
All of the singers had fabulous voices and Nicole said she differentiated herself by singing to express emotion.
Capturing the title 'Singer Of The World' has opened up many possibilities for Cabell who is said to already have 30 concerts scheduled worldwide, she also received a Welsh Royal Crystal trophy and £10,000 for her efforts. Click here to visit Nicole's website
