Something New

Something New'She never expected to fall in love with a white man.'

A new film written, produced, directed by and starring black women is breaking new ground in the US by featuring a successful black woman in a relationship with a white male.

The romantic comedy Something New crosses racial lines and shows the beautiful Kenya (Sanaa Lathan) a soon-to-be partner in a successful accounting firm, falling for Ryan (Simon Baker) a landscape gardener.

Director Sanaa Hamri explains the movie is really about Kenya's struggles with race and how she never expected to fall in love with a white man.

Of course Something New is filled with the usual family jokes one has to put up with when dating someone from another race but it's about more than that.

Producer Stephanie Allain said, 'We wanted to put something on film that we haven't seen before… Why shouldn't we have choices as women? Just as we can be sitting at a table [in a business situation] with 12 white men looking at us for our opinion, it was high time to show a woman in that position being sought after by a lot of different men... It echoes the promise of endless possibilities that haven't always been available to us.olourful world.' Alicia hopes the company will provide the opportunity to expose just that.

The filmmakers refer to the statistic that 42.4 percent of African American women are not married and the higher their socio-economic level the less likely they are to wed. Only 5 percent of black women marry outside their race. (Something New writer Kriss Turner originally named her movie '42.4.')

Something New will be hitting US cinemas this February and the UK later this year.
