Author Jaime Adoff has been awarded the Coretta Scott King /
John Steptoe Award For New Talent for the teenage novel Jimi
and Me.
The award which was established in 1969 to commemorate the life and work
of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and to honour Mrs Coretta Scott
King for her courage and determination in continuing to work for peace
and world brotherhood. The award is given for an outstandingly inspirational
and educational contribution.
Jimi And Me is just that and author Jaime is delighted. Even though he's
in his thirties Jaime says he still feels like he's in high school.
'I guess that's why I feel so close to the characters I create.' He says
on his website. 'There is no barrier between me and the kids in my books.
When I sit down to write, the words and actions of my characters really
feel like an extension of myself. I feel like the kids are in the room
with me, or better yet, I'm with them.'
Maybe it's because Jaime is so close to his characters
that he is able to bring life to a story based on loss and betrayal.
Jimi And Me is particularly welcomed because it gives us a window into
the mind of a teenage boy, not only learning to cope with the loss and
betrayal in his life but also coming out the other side.
