Wanda Sykes On Why She's 'So Uppity'

Wanda SykesAnd why she loves white women.

American Comedian and actress Wanda Sykes is the voice of the eccentric old sloth (Sid’s granny) in the fourth Ice Age film. She also stars with Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm. Wanda Recently told London's Metro newspaper that she could trace her ancestors back further than most African Americans.

'My ninth great-grandmother, Elizabeth Banks, was an indentured servant, a white woman who came to America from Scotland. She had sex with a Negro, got pregnant and had a child called Mary [around 1683]. Because she was a free white woman, the child was also free. That’s how we were able to trace my roots back so far, because they had history and records because they were free.'

Wanda said she found it very emotional discovering her history. 'I realised that’s why I’m so uppity and why I love white women – there’s a connection there with my great, great grandmother (laughs). It does make me emotional because I have a lineage from my father’s mother that can go all the way back that far. Most African Americans had no records because they were treated as property, they were slaves. The white owners counted them the same way they did their animals.'

Ice Age 4: Continental Drift is in cinemas now.
