According to the US Census Bureau, currently 31% of America's
children are children of colour, or non-white. That number will increase
by 50% by the year 2020, yet the number of toy stores stocking ethnically
sensitive products is as one parent put it, 'abysmal.'
UK stores don't fare any better and many parents
have had to resort to searching online to find suitable toys and books
for their children.
Dolls Like Me is a new online toy superstore that
aims to end the frustration of parents looking for quality dolls andpuppets
that resemble their ethnic and mixed-race children.
Gary-Robinson President of Dolls Like Me said, 'I grew up in a community
and family where interracial families with biracialchildren were commonplace.
When I saw that companies were starting to take notice and producing
toys for this audience, I knew I was on the right track.' She concludes,
'One of my biggest sellers so far has been Goodwin, a mixed-race boy
doll from Real-Kidz.'
Consumers will find a wide choice of African
American, Asian, Biracial, Latino, and Native American dolls, puppets,
and toys; stationery items, including Biracial and Latino greeting cards
and African American, Latina, and Asian diva 'post-it' notes; urban-style
American Girl doll clothing; quality doll furniture; custom multicultural
doll quilts (which double as wall hangers); and self-esteem books for
children of colour.
