It's been alleged that administrators at an American school
who were facing state guidelines requiring them to enrol more white students
changed the designations of at least six mixed-race students from African
American or Hispanic to white in school documents, in some cases without
parents' permission.
Some students were asked if it was ok if their racial designation was
changed in order for the school to attract more funding. Many of the
parents of the children who attend Hartford Magnet school were angry
that they were not consulted even though some members of the school staff
say they were.
What is interesting to note is that it is still ok in the US to list
mixed-race children as black even though they may look white but it is
still not acceptable to list them as white.
And while mixed-race individuals who choose to identify as white are
said to be guilty of 'passing' those who choose to identify as black
are seen to be embracing their black heritage.
If the tables were turned
and this was a predominately white school it would be acceptable for
them to say that they had filled their quota for black students even
if those students were mixed-race.
Whilst the school cannot be condoned for changing the race of the students,
their action does raise questions regarding racial categories and highlights
the problems facing the generation of mixed-race children in America
and many other countries for that matter who still remain invisible except
to fill the black quota.
