My Father's Eyes

Lisa Fotedar MillerLisa Fotedar Miller's leading the WAY.

Lisa Fotedar Miller debut film My Father's Eyes follows a young mixed-race woman as she meets her Indian father for the first time. Set in New York, parent and child make their final preparations before their meeting. When they do meet, each receives an unexpected gift from the other, culminating in an ending that will start a new chapter in their lives.

My Father's Eyes is based on Lisa's first meeting with her own father. Lisa began her career as an actress, but found a dearth of roles for strong female protagonists. 'To have a career in this business long term, you have to think in terms of good stories to tell,' said Lisa. 'As an actress ... I wasn't finding that experience, so I had to make my own stories. I believe because of the way the business is, as an artist I will need to tell the stories that I want to tell, that I want to see told.'

Lisa is following My Father's Eyes with Namaste, a feature length screenplay which will pick up where the short leaves off. Lisa is also completing a one-woman show entitled What Are You? The 60-minute show focuses on life as a racial misfit.

Intermix.org.uk asked Lisa if she had any message for mixed-race individuals struggling for recognition? 'Yes, she said. 'By the frequency with which I get asked "What Are You" I am going to start answering 'yes.' I am a WAY (Literally 'W'hat 'A're 'Y'ou). I am a WAY of thinking, of existing, of representing races that is different. What defines me is the fact that I am undefinable in traditional racial terms. So there it is, I am a WAY. And in my WAY I will tell my stories, I will live my life, and I will never apologize for what I am not. I hope, in so doing, to connect with and inspire other WAYs to do the same.'

My Father's Eyes is currently being shown at several American Film Festivals and Lisa is hoping to bring the film to UK audiences in the near future.
