The Funniest Mom in America

Rubi Nicholas, Nick at Nite's "Funniest Mom in America," at home in Colorado with her husband, Ted, and daughters Yasmin, 'She truly understands what makes us laugh.'

Life as part of a mixed-race family can sometimes be difficult and for many of us it's often hard to see the funny side of life against a backdrop of prejudice and marginalisation. Rubi Nicholas however is no ordinary woman.

As a first generation Pakistani Muslim married to a Greek stay-at-home dad, Rubi has drawn upon her experiences as a working mother in a mixed-race, interfaith marriage and developed them into a stand-up comedy act.

Viewers of America's Nick At Night recently watched Rubi win the title of 'The Funniest Mom in America' after following Rubi along with nine other finalists over a series of shows which required them to compete in a variety of comedic challenges, each underscoring the contestants' talents and personalities. The moms, divided into teams, tackled everything from entertaining an audience of kids to performing for New Yorkers on the go to a sitcom screen test challenge. The lowest scoring performers on each challenge faced off against each other in a head-to-head stand-up comedy battle. Over the course of the series, five moms were eliminated and the five remaining contestants competed in the show's finale, performing stand-up comedy to a packed house on a New York City stage.

'Rubi's ability to incorporate her ethnic heritage, her family life as a corporate woman whose husband is a stay-at-home dad, and the antics of her two little girls is completely refreshing,' states Sal Maniaci, Senior Vice President, Development and Original Productions, TV Land and Nick at Nite. 'She has the gift of weaving together her story and allowing the audience toexperience her life. She truly understands what makes us laugh.'

Rubi won $50,000 for all her hard work, plus she got the chance to host a special night of programming on Nick at Nite on Mother's Day. In addition, she will have the opportunity to develop her own show for the network.
