When a local policeman stopped Darain Housen coming home from
a dance in the early hours of the morning and asked him to remove his
hat, the 40-year-old barber was unable to comply.
The policeman was surprised to discover that Darain had not removed his
hat for the last twenty years and why? Because Darain's hat is made from
his own hair.
Darain said he came up with the idea after
some of his friends decided to wear hats to a party but he could not
find one to wear. He decided to create one of his own and trimmed his
hair to resemble a cap. At the party the hairstyle created such a stir
that Darain was awarded a crate of beer to share between him and his
friends.
Darain said the morning after the dance he clipped
the rough edges and then for six months he kept growing the 'peak' but
since then he has not made any major changes to his 'hat'.
Although he has had many requests to repeat the style for others Darain
says that the texture of their hair has not made it possible.
Darain can be easily spotted on the Caribbean island of Jamaica and says
people come from all over the island to have their photos taken with
him but he has never charged a fee to touch his hair or have a photo
of it taken.
After sporting the style for the past twenty years the Jamaican barber
says he would feel light without it.
