Mixed-Race Summer Camp A Hit
Children have fun and learn about identity.
Mixed-race families in San Francisco had a special treat this summer when Fusion a program for Mixed Heritage Youth launched its first ever summer day-camp. Youngsters between the ages of eight and thirteen enjoyed a wide range of activities from cooking to Philipino martial arts.
Everyday participants explored mixed identity led by mixed-race staff as well as mixed heritage guest artists. In addition to interacting with peers and role-models of mixed heritage, the families were able to build community ties through family evenings and dinners.
The pilot program was so successful that Fusion intend to launch a series of monthly family workshops later this year to give the youngsters further opportunity to explore their identities in a fun and safe environment.
