African American comic W. Kamau Bell, host of Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell on FX, recently explained the best part of having a mixed-race baby to late night host Conan O'Brien.
'When she was born, she came out super white looking,' Bell said. 'She's getting darker as each day goes by. I've been having fun charting her color progress by using the covers of Michael Jackson CDs.'
'When she was born, she was Dangerous, later she became Bad,' he joked. 'We're aiming for Thriller, but she's never going to reach Off the Wall.'
Bell also talked about the different reactions he and his wife get when they are each on their own with their daughter. He said when the baby is with her mother she looks black and when she is with him she looks white. He said he was often amused by the reactions of white peoplewhen he was on his own with his daughter and joked about running off before things got difficult.
Whilst Bell is a comedian and one who specialises in making racial commentary, when do jokes become a bit too uncomfortable? If a white parent had been making the same comments about their mixed-race child, would they have been accused of being racist?
Bell said a mixed-race baby was the new in thing, was better than the ipad and that everyone should get one.
