Intermix.org.uk is a website for the benefit of mixed-race families, individuals and anyone who feels they have a multiracial identity and want to join us.

Please note most of these terms are derogatory and though they have been used by academics to describe those who are of mixed-racial heritage Intermix do not condone their use. This list is a record of terms that have been used to enable readers to recognize the meanings and so counteract their misuse.



Mixed - having or showing various races or social classes.

Mixed marriage
- a marriage between people of different races or religions.

Mixed-Race – having parents of different racial backgrounds.

Monoracial - refers to people who claim a single racial heritage. It is also a system of racial classification that only recognizes one racial designation per person.’ (Root 1996: x)

Morisco
- a. Moorish b. Moslem convert to Christianity.

Mulato – a derogatory term meaning: 1. a. mulatto b. dark coloured fellow
2. a person who has one black parent and one white 3. ‘In its current usage, covers someone who is of varying fractions of African and European heritage. Its original meaning has negative connotations; many believe the word is derived from the Spanish mulatto for mule, the infertile hybrid between a donkey and a horse. The suffix suggests a diminutive status. Arabic origins have been suggested for this term.’ (Root 1996: x-xi).

Mulatress – a derogatory term meaning: a female mulatto.

Multiracial - refers to people who are of two or more racial heritages. It is the most inclusive term to refer to people across all racial mixes. Thus it also includes biracial people.’ (Root 1996: xi).

Mustee/mestee – a derogatory term meaning: a. a person with one parent White and other a quadroon; an octoroon b. a person with parents of different races.

Octoroon – a derogatory term meaning: a person having one-eighth Black blood, the offspring of a quadroon and a White x).

Pardo – a derogatory term meaning: mulatto, half-breed; (Mexican) low-class person
